Brembo: From a Bergamo Workshop to Everyday Cars

Brembo is an Italian brake manufacturer best known for racing and for brightly painted calipers on performance cars. It also makes brake parts for ordinary vehicles. Here is a neutral look at the company.
Where did Brembo come from?

Brembo was founded in 1961 near Bergamo, in northern Italy, by Emilio Bombassei and Italo Breda. The name comes from the Brembo river in that area. It began as a small mechanical workshop and grew by making brake components, including discs, for Italian carmakers.
Today the company is a large international supplier of braking systems. Its operational base remains in the Bergamo area.
Like most large brake suppliers, it makes parts for several kinds of vehicles, from passenger cars to motorcycles and commercial vehicles, and sells both to automakers and into the replacement market.
Why is it associated with racing?
Brembo has supplied brake components to Formula 1 teams for decades, and it also supplies brake systems in motorcycle racing. Racing is a demanding test for brakes, because repeated hard stops from high speed create extreme heat.
That visibility is a big part of the brand image. Racing brakes are built for conditions that road cars do not meet, so their parts are different from what is fitted to a family sedan.
What does Brembo make for regular cars?

Most of the company's business is not in racing. It supplies original-equipment brake parts to automakers, and it sells aftermarket parts for vehicles already on the road.
- Brake discs and pads: the wear parts replaced during ordinary brake service.
- Calipers: the hydraulic clamps that press the pads onto the disc.
- Other brake components: items such as brake fluid and related system parts, for cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles.
Some drivers have a Brembo-made part on their car without knowing it, because the supplier's name is not always visible once the wheels are on.
Does a Brembo badge mean a car has 'better' brakes?
A badge tells you who supplied the part. It does not by itself tell you how the brakes will perform. Stopping ability depends on the whole system: tires, pads, rotor size, fluid, the vehicle weight, and the condition of every part.
A well-maintained standard brake system can serve a daily driver well, and an impressive-looking one that is worn or neglected will not. Condition and fit for the vehicle matter more than the name on the caliper.
Whatever brand is on your car, our shop installs parts appropriate to the vehicle and the customer's quote.
